Team : Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is one amongst the eight teams contending in the Indian Premier League, a cricket tournament organized by the BCCI. Owned by UB Group chairman Vijay Mallya the Royal Challengers Bangalore represents Bangalore city. Royal Challengers Bangalore are led by Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid, their captain and icon player respectively.  The team is coached by former South African coach Ray Jennings.

Royal Challengers Bangalore was amongst the eight teams that were bided for before the IPL started. Vijay Mallya had placed the second largest bid for the RCB following Mukesh Ambani’s Bid for the Mumbai Indians. The team’s brand ambassadors include Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone.

The team wears a red and golden colored jersey with a RC (Royal Challengers) emblem. The word Royal challengers come from the top selling liquor brand by Vijay Mallya.

During the 2008 IPL Season, RCB was the second last team on the points table. It had won 4 matches and lost 10 matches. It was during this season that Charu Sharma was replaced by Brijesh Patel as the CEO due to the team’s pathetic performance. Key players like Jacques Kalis and Rahul Dravid failed to perform during this season leaving Vijay Mallya annoyed. Failure to select the right set of players and inefficient coaching were the main reasons for the team’s poor performance in season 1.

During IPL 2009, the team made a great come back by defeating Rajasthan Royals in their very first match. Unfortunately bad luck struck royal challengers under the command of Kevin Pietersen when they lost a bunch of matches. Kevin Pietersen was then replaced by Anil Kumble. Luckily the bad phase was temporary and the team quickly picked up pace and went on to defeat the most consistent team the Chennai Super Kings in the semi-finals.  Even with their brilliant performance in the final, they lost to Deccan chargers in the finals.
