2010 DLF India Premier League T20 Cricket Tournament

DLF India Premier League

IPL or should we say DLF Indian Premier League, it is the richest T20 tournament currently being played. The person behind this idea is BCCI vice president and now chairmen and the commissioner of the IPL, Mr. Lalit Modi. The first IPL tournament had huge success and changed all parameters of conventional cricket as well as conventional payment system. After Lalit Modi declared concept of IPL in 2008, huge uproar erupted from all sort of cricket committees from many countries. Some of them greeted this new announcement while some of them started saying that this will degrade cricket quality, so we have to stop it now. Many criticizers started criticized that, BCCI is taking losing side but first season proved otherwise.

First season started on April 18, 2008 and been played for 46 days in which 58 matches were played and one was cancelled due to weather conditions. There were total eight teams competing in that tournament viz. Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal challengers Bangalore, Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals. These team titles were sold to the highest bidder. the Highest bid of all the team was placed by Mukesh Ambani (Reliance group) for any team; he bought Mumbai Indians for almost $111.9. Some of the Indian players were kept as icon for each team, for example Sachin Tendulkar was icon for Mumbai Indians. In first tournament, matches were played using Round Robin method i.e. each team played one match at home and one match away against every other team.

Auction was conducted for players also. Bids for television rights also broke all records. Sony television bought rights for telecasting at $918 billion and one of the biggest property developer group DLF won the bid for title sponsorship at $50 million. IPL’s second season was moved to South Africa as Indian General Election were also declared at same time and Indian government refused to give security as it would have overloaded them. Now, third season of IPL is scheduled on March 12, 2010 with period of 45 days. In this season, two new teams named as Ahmadabad and Dharamshala have been added and icon status of players have been removed.

Following the its grand success in 2008, the IPL 2009 was organized in South Africa due to lack of security available in India on account of Parliamentary Elections. The format for both the seasons remained unchanged. Currently the 2010 IPL is scheduled for March 12, 2010. The tournament will run for 45 days and will be held in India. Ahemdabad, vishakapatnam, Dharmasala and Nagpur are few of the new venues for the tournament.

Following a court battle over some issues Sony Entertainment Television was made to pay Rs. 87 billion for 10 years.  Recently IPL vice president Lalit Modi disclosed that YouTube would broadcast IPL 2010.

The IPL has struck a deal with YouTube owner Google. Team : Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals is the Jaipur franchise cricket team of Indian Premier League. The franchise is owned by Emerging Group and chairman is Manoj Badale. Investor list also includes Lachlan Murdoch, Aditya Chellaram and Suresh Chellaram. The group purchased this franchise at the cost of $67 million. This was the least expensive franchise in Indian Premier League.

Rajasthan Royals was the least fancied team in the league as there were very less players from the playing squad of the other countries. Bollywood Actress Shilpa Shetty and her business partner Raj Kundra shared around $15.4 million for 11.7% wager. There were no hopes from the team at the start of the tournament as it was considered as the weakest team.

Intelligent captaincy and fantastic coaching of the Shane Warn with his dedication flabbergasted everyone when they booked their first win against Punjab franchise, Kings XI Punjab. After that game, Royals did not look back claiming 5 wins in a row. They finished in 1st place in league table with an incredible record of 11-3. Rajasthan Royals was the first team to book place in Semis.

With a win over Delhi, Royals booked place in finals and became hot favorite for the league. They won inaugural IPL by defeating Chennai Super Kings. Many players of the team performed consistently good claiming many individual awards throughout the tournament. Team was awarded with DLF IPL trophy and $1.2 million prize money.

In 2009 IPL, Royals came in ground with lots of hopes but they failed achieve what they did in 2008 season. The team failed to qualify for even semi-finals. Absence of players and players missing their form were the major reasons for poor performance. In 2010, Royals haven’t claimed any player in auction yet but with return of Shane Watson in the squad, this golden blue team is hoping for replay of 2008 performance.

Team : Delhi Daredevils

Delhi Daredevils

One of the strongest and famous team in Indian Premier League, Delhi Daredevils, is Delhi franchise of IPL. The team is owned by GMR group and Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir leads the team. Sandeep Reddy, on behalf of GMR group, bought the franchise for $84 million. Inaugural season of IPL was well for Daredevils.

Almost all the major players of the Daredevils were available for whole tournament except Daniel Vettori. Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir took whole responsibility of batting. Majority of foreign players selected were bowlers including Mohammed Asif and Glenn McGrath. Team played really good with a record of 7-6. They won 4 out of their 5 games and grab place in semi-finals. In semis, they lost to Royals by 105 runs.

On 14th July 2008, pace bowler Asif was tested positive for unnamed banned substance. He was banned for the rest of tournament. 2008 IPL season was not bright for Delhi team. In 2009 IPL, they finished on the top of the league but couldn’t make it to the finals.

Injury to Sehwag and poor form of Gambhir didn’t affect the performance of the team in 2009 season. Responsible and sensible play by AB de Villiers and Dilshan helped team to leave mark on league. Hopes of winning the league of Daredevils were scattered by Gilchrist, in Semi-final against Chargers, who made fastest fifty in IPL. Delhi did not meet the requirements for Champions league but their performance in group stage made them eligible for Champions league T20.

Delhi Daredevils made partnership with Eastern Titans, South African domestic team to encourage the young talent of both teams. However, Mcgrath was not seen much in picture in season which creates question mark of his presence in upcoming IPL tournament with Delhi. The anthem “We are fighters” is in the voice of Kailash Kher and it is played in every match on home ground, Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi.

Team : Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians

Start of IPL has brought more excitement in filed of T20 cricket. There are cricket teams in IPL representing a city or region. Mumbai Indians is one of such teams. The biggest brand in India, Reliance Industries Limited, bought rights for Mumbai franchise of Indian Premier League costing them around $111.9 million. Reliance purchased rights in an auction held on 24th January, 2008.

As from statistics you can see that RIL has made MI the most expensive team and thus got rights to hold semi-finals and final in Mumbai on the home grounds of MI viz. Wankhede Stadium and Dr. D.Y.Patil sports academy. Both the grounds are located in Mumbai. The team was unveiled on 17th April, 2008 in Mumbai.
Though the team was built with strong players, first season of IPL was nightmare for MI. they lost their captain and world’s one of the greatest player, Sachin Tendulkar due to hamstring injury. Charge was then taken by Harbhajan Singh who failed to gift a win to his teammates in first 4 matches. When Singh was suspended over a controversy, Shaun Pollock took charges of the team.

Under the captaincy of Pollock, Mumbai Indians claimed 6 consecutive wins raising their semi-final chances. Unfortunately, they lost their next 3 games with very close margins. Sanath jayasuriya played important role in team victory. First season ended for MI with a net loss of INR 16 crore.

2009 IPL season was not different for Mumbai Indians as they again failed to make place in semi-finals. During transfer window 2008-09, Zaheer Khan and Sheekhar Dhawan joined Mumbai Indians. They bought J P Duminy, Mohammad Ashraful and other players in the squad in player auction. There were changes in management also as Pravin Amre took charge as coach. This year West-Indian all rounder, Kieron Pollard has become part of squad. Thus this year owner of this blue team is keeping high expectations from the team.

Team : Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders also known as KKR is one of the contender in IPL tournament. It is representing Kolkata in IPL or also known as DLF Indian Premier League. Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and her husband Jai Mehta bought this team under the banner of Red Chilies Entertainment for US$75.1 million. Saurav Ganguly played as an icon player for this team. In a survey done by a leading brand valuation companies, it was ranked as most valuable IPL franchise. Its celebrity co-owner Shahrukh Khan advertised his team/franchise very much. But all of his efforts got wasted as in first season team led by Saurav Ganguly under the coaching of Dave Whatmore performed pathetically and stood second last in overall ranking.

Official song designed by Shahrukh himself for up selling of his team is “Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo re (In Bengali)” which means we can do it, we will do it and we will win. And dress designed for this team was colored in gold and black. In first season of IPL, it started its season with bang. It defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore. Its opening batsmen Brandon McCullum scored a whooping 158 in very less balls and which is still highest score made by any batsmen in T20 cricket. But after winning in first two matches, however they started getting failure in every match and lost many matches back to back. At the end of tournament team managed to reserved some victories for itself but it was too late as they were already out of tournament.

In meantime many reports came out on rift between Sourav and Shahrukh over many issues such as team composition, Batting or bowling choices or Shahrukh giving all powers to John Buchanan. ICC’s anti corruption committee also banned Shahrukh from going into the dress room while match is being played. But financially KKR was the most successful team. It earned 13crore of pure profit. In 2009, rift between Shahrukh and Sourav widened and resulted in Sourav being removed from captaincy. Now I third IPL season, team management has bought Shane Bond, New-Zealand’s fast bowler. Let’s hope, he will be lucky for team and team perform well.

Team : Kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab team owned by Indian actress Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia of Bombay Dyeing group, Karan Paul of Apeejay Surendera group and Mohit Burman from Dabur group is one of the most glamorous team in IPL. At start of first season, team lost two consecutive matches, but after that even after their star players like Bret Lee and Simon Catich returned to Australia for playing matches from national team; they started winning the game. It won 9 matches out of 10 after first two matches. Many people said this is due to a new find of the tournament, Shaun Marsh. Opening batsmen from Western Australia was the highest scorer with strike rate of 139.68 and an average around 68.44 and that too in only 11 matches.

Team made their way to semis quite easily, but after that it lost their match with Chennai Super Kings in semis. Similar to all other IPL teams, this team was also found itself in many issues like racism and dispute with local police service. It was reported that team’s two cheer leaders, both having African roots, were disallowed to enter inside the PCA stadium. But team found its way through this issue safely. But then it deadlocked in another issue. Police demanded money in exchange to protection but team management or PCA stadium association was not willing to provide such compensation. So police threatened to provide nil security and also one owner of team got engaged himself in dispute with senior police superintendent. Police also filed official complaint against Ness stating that he granted access to non authorized person in stadium and also he bought alcohol in stadium secretly.

Before second season started, news was flowing about rift between Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia. But they declared that any differences between them will not affect their team or their performance in any manner.

We can say that this team will be one of the strong contenders to take away title prize of IPL 2010.

Team : Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is one amongst the eight teams contending in the Indian Premier League, a cricket tournament organized by the BCCI. Owned by UB Group chairman Vijay Mallya the Royal Challengers Bangalore represents Bangalore city. Royal Challengers Bangalore are led by Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid, their captain and icon player respectively.  The team is coached by former South African coach Ray Jennings.

Royal Challengers Bangalore was amongst the eight teams that were bided for before the IPL started. Vijay Mallya had placed the second largest bid for the RCB following Mukesh Ambani’s Bid for the Mumbai Indians. The team’s brand ambassadors include Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone.

The team wears a red and golden colored jersey with a RC (Royal Challengers) emblem. The word Royal challengers come from the top selling liquor brand by Vijay Mallya.

During the 2008 IPL Season, RCB was the second last team on the points table. It had won 4 matches and lost 10 matches. It was during this season that Charu Sharma was replaced by Brijesh Patel as the CEO due to the team’s pathetic performance. Key players like Jacques Kalis and Rahul Dravid failed to perform during this season leaving Vijay Mallya annoyed. Failure to select the right set of players and inefficient coaching were the main reasons for the team’s poor performance in season 1.

During IPL 2009, the team made a great come back by defeating Rajasthan Royals in their very first match. Unfortunately bad luck struck royal challengers under the command of Kevin Pietersen when they lost a bunch of matches. Kevin Pietersen was then replaced by Anil Kumble. Luckily the bad phase was temporary and the team quickly picked up pace and went on to defeat the most consistent team the Chennai Super Kings in the semi-finals.  Even with their brilliant performance in the final, they lost to Deccan chargers in the finals.

Team : Deccan Chargers

Deccan Chargers

Deccan Charger’s name was derived from Deccan Chronicle, a known media group.  It is one of the participants in DLF Indian Premier League and represents Hyderabad in tournament. It is the only team which has no icon player. V.V.S. Laxman was decided to be the icon player of the team, but Laxman refused the request so many new young players can get a chance of playing. So due to Laxman’s refusal towards playing as icon player, Adam Gilchrist played as captain of team. They performed so pathetically in first tournament that they were at 8th place by the end of tournament. But it looked as they went through many transformations because  dramatically they won second season of IPL.

Deccan Chronicle, media group bought title of Hyderabad for US$107 million. Its logo has also been taken from media group’s own logo – a charging bull. Team management initially got hold on many star players like Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist, Shahid Afridi, Scott Styris and Herschelle Gibbs. From inaugural time, Team was one of the favorites to take away IPL title. But team failed to reach even semi-finals. Andrew Symonds, one of the star player of the team, played only 3 matches and returned to his country to play for national team. And even in those 3 matches, in which he played, his performance was not up to the mark.

In total 14 matches, Deccan Chargers played; team managed to bag only 2 matches and lost remaining 12. After this pathetic performance, team management sacked their C.E.O. and entire administration team. In second season of IPL, team performed brilliantly. In first round of season 2, they won all matches. And in all matches their captain Adam Gilchrist outplayed all bowlers of other side and scored 495 runs and caught out 15 players behind the stumps and bagged player of the tournament award.

Team : Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is one amongst the eight teams contending in the Indian Premier League, a tournament organized by the BCCI. The Chennai Super Kings represents the city of Chennai and is headed by M.S. Dhoni their captain. The team is trained by Stephen Fleming at the team’s home ground M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

The team is owned by India Cements Ltd and named after the numerous rulers that emerged from this area. The team is seen wearing blue and yellow jerseys with a lion logo.

US$ 91 million were paid by the managing Director of India Cements Ltd, Mr. N Srinivasan who also happens to be the secretary of BCCI. The team’s chief selector is V.B. Chandrasekhar. Krishnamachari Srikkanth along with Joseph Vijay is the team’s brand ambassador.

The Chennai Super Kings had a commanding start at the 2008 IPL. The team won 4 matches in a line but as Jacob Oram, Michael Hussey and Mathew Haden left the team for international duty the team started tumbling. The team’s batting performance reduced drastically and the team lost three matches in a row. Luckily the team picked up itself and secured its place in the semi finals by winning its final league match against Deccan Chargers. In the semi finals the Kings XI Punjab were befeated by 9 wickets by the Chennai Super Kings. The Chennai Super Kings lost to Rajasthan Royals in the finals of IPL 2008.

Thilan Tushara, George Bailey and Andew Flintoff were the new faces in the team for IPL 2009. Apart from them Sudeep Tyagi made a comeback. The team decided to send Abhinav Mukund, Napoleon Einstein, Selvam Suresh Kumar, Sivaramakrishnan Vidyut and Srikanth Anirudha back to slim their squad. The team lost their 1st match with Mumbai Indian but won the second match against Royal Challengers. The Chennai Super Kings entered the semi finals by defeating Mumbai Indians just to lose to the team they has already defeated, the Royal Challenegers Banglore.
